Market leader in enterprise application software, SAP (Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing), has partnered with Kenya’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Multi Media University to deliver an ICT skills training program. The aim is to beef up skills capacity for graduates from underprivileged backgrounds and make them more employable upon entering the job market.
On Friday, July 26th, the partners launched a six-week training module covering technology, business, finance and logistics. Africa Business Review has learned that the program is also designed to develop critical soft business skills for students at Multi Media University in Ongata Rongai.
SAP, the Kenyan government and the university started preparation in September 2012 for the pilot program, which formed part of a “larger African effort” launched in May.
“This program will offer selected students across the continent the opportunity to develop world-class IT and business skills, effectively giving them an opportunity to play a role in contributing towards Africa’s future economic growth and infrastructure development,” SAP said in a statement.
The program, part of a larger effort focusing on five African countries, will focus on a variety of skills key to success in today’s competitive job environment, including SAP certification. The East Africa chapter aims to create 75 university graduates a year and place them in internships at SAP customers and partners, as well as some of Kenya’s leading companies.
Dr Fred Matiangi, ICT Cabinet Secretary, presided over the launching event. Also in attendance were Kenya ICT Board Acting CEO, Victor Kyalo, and SAP officials including Franck Cohen, SAP’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) President, and Pfungwa Serima, CEO of SAP Africa.
The Skills for Africa program, a multimillion-euro investment, is the African chapter of the SAP Workforce of the Future campaign aimed at tackling the pressing demand for technology solutions and the need for the right talent to be developed in Africa.
